Truly the strangest thing – I can’t explain what The Fine Line is about! I really can’t! It’s the first question people ask and the only question I can’t answer!! So, it shouldn’t surprise you that I struggled and struggled to get a synopsis to the publisher for the front flap of the hardcover. I truly think it’s because I’m so engulfed in the novel itself that I can’t pick out one main theme, one exact “pursuit”. The byline “One Passion. One Prison. One Pursuit” isn’t exactly a window into the storyline, maybe a peephole at best. So many areas of life come and go throughout the novel. It was hard to narrow it down and identify the big picture. Several sheets of paper with words and phrases jotted in every direction resulted in this:

A quick phone call to tell my dad that we would be in Iowa the week of March 10th took a quick turn when I asked him a simple question, “What are you doing?” Totally catching me off-guard, he said, “Well, I just got done reading an article about you.” What?!?
I knew my article would be featured in my hometown newspaper, The Newton Daily News, but I had no idea when. I was so excited to read my very first newspaper plug on The Fine Line. I loved it. I overlooked the grammatical errors, (hey, there are a few in The Fine Line itself -even after months of eyes combing the pages) and enjoyed Ty Rushing’s angle. His opening lines cracked me up and made me feel like I was a part of something bigger, something huge, something . . . magnificent, the world of published authors.
A few weeks ago, my first tears emerged when my name become searchable on Barnes and Noble. The realization that I am an author; I do have a book. It happened. It’s happening. And it’s not the accomplishment or the coolness, although it is both an accomplishment and cool compared to my daily routines, but it is, rather, the complete surrender to God’s plan for my life. I’ve been holding on to this calling for so long, keeping it to myself, hiding it at times, even refusing to let it emerge. So, for me, seeing it all unfold before me is evidence that when I surrendered and gave it to God, He took over, He is taking over, and He will take it wherever He wants.
So, here’s a link to article #1. https://www.newtondailynews.com/2013/03/06/the-fine-line-author-credits-newton-schools-for-success/awz6me2/

On Wednesday, March 6th, I came home, already THRILLED to have my softcover on Monday, the 4th. In fact, I was still absorbing the arrival of the softcover and wasn’t even thinking about this one coming. As I pulled up to the front of our house, I saw a package on our front porch. . . . Inside, I found this! It is perfect. Exactly like I wanted it – love the shine, love the jacket, love the inside flaps, love the color, love, love, love! Holding it is so much different than penning it, writing it, filling up spiral notebooks and word documents. Envisioning it and then actually seeing it are two entirely different things. Although much less miraculous and lovable than my four boys, there is some sense of parallelism between these two “births”: anticipation, waiting, developing, slowing down, and all sorts of curiosities: Will it turn out ok? Will there be any major flaws? Will people love it? Will I think it’s perfect but others will think it's a little odd? Will we make it through the entire process? Will the doctors notice if anything’s wrong? Will it prosper and be embraced throughout life? Will we know what to do with it? Rick and I don’t spend time looming over potential fears or mishaps with the growth and birth of our boys. We trust God completely, knowing the children He gives us are His, not ours. We are blessed to be chosen to parent them in all their shapes and forms. So, this “birth” is a little different in that sense, many more questions, much like the birth of our first son, Greyson. When it’s the first child, there are so many questions. As others come along, the process becomes more familiar, and the questions dissipate. As my first novel, many questions came and went, but the ultimate surrender of allowing God to control its “life” is all the same. I know God created me to be a mother, and I also know that God created me to write to honor Him. And with that, I need to get to these little guys!
Forever Pursuing, Emily
